New Years Resolutions — December 31, 2013

New Years Resolutions

First off, “What’s your New Year’s Resolution?” Is quite possibly the most aggravating question there is. No matter what kind of answer I come up with I can’t help but feel stupid or judged by someone, and deep down I know I will probably stop keeping up with my resolution after a couple weeks or month at best. Last year “no fast food” lasted about a month before I stopped thinking about it and caved.

After growing and coming to the realization that a “new years resolution” means a lot more than just saying to lose “X” pounds, I have made a list of 7 simple things to make 2014 the best year yet.

1. Technology
Too often I am with other people whether it is my friends, family or strangers on public transportation and see people on their phones or other technological devices. These people drive me nuts! Am I really that boring that you can’t hangout or have a phone less conversation with me? I have to admit to that I can be horrible with technology as well and am at fault; but when you see people who don’t look up from their smart phones or even acknowledge someoneā€¦ it breaks my heart. Take time to actually be there when you are with friends and family. Listen to what they have to say and be engaged in the conversation. If you are on your phone the whole night someone is going to assume you’re not interested and don’t give a rat’s ass about them. Don’t be surprised if they start doing the same to you. It’s not that hard to disconnect even for a short time. I’m not saying you aren’t allowed to be on your phone, just be sure you are actually present when with other people.

2. Family & Friends
As I have gotten older I have had many ups and downs with friends. There are people who come around when it is convenient for them or take advantage of you or people who are full of drama. Take my advice it will save you a lot of heart ache: forget them. Stop taking time reaching out to people who continue to hurt you and manipulate you and hangout when it is “convenient” for them. The friends that continue to reach out to you, who are there for you and who put in an honest effort to be in your life, KEEP THEM.
Family. I have been blessed with a terrific family. When you are home visiting family actually do things with them. When it comes down to it, you are stuck with them whether you like it or not. They are the only people who will love you no matter what and never stop loving you.

3. Success
Dream Big. Need I say more? Set goals for yourself and push yourself. Use your resources, network with people to better yourself. Don’t settle for what is familiar and what is easy. In 2013 I made a point to shoot high and to be successful and I did a damn good job doing so. If you fall short of a goal you set don’t lose hope, use it as motivation to keep going. I recommend this to everyone no matter your age, you will surprise yourself with how successful you can be.

4. LoveĀ yourself
I am nearly 6 foot tall (yes, I do realize that is tall for a girl) I used to cringe when someone would come up to me and say “whoa, you’re tall,” thank you captain obvious. As I have grown as a person and became more confident I have learned to love my body. I have killer long ass legs which I love to flaunt around. My boyfriend is the same height as me and I have no problem wearing heels and being taller than him. No matter how tall, short, thick or thin you are, the key to your happiness is to love yourself the way you are.

Spend some time disconnected from the world, no phone, no laptop no television and just think. You will learn so much about yourself. You need that quiet “me” time every once in a while to clear your mind

5. Say Thank-You
Pick up the phone and call someone you haven’t spoken with in a while. Contrary to what you believe, you don’t need a reason to call. Have a light hearted conversation and say thanks tell them you have been thinking of them. I want to reiterate one point: Pick up the phone and call. Yes call, DO NOT text them. It is much more meaningful to put in a little extra effort and call someone. I for one absolutely love getting phone calls from friends and family members out of the blue, it means the world to me.

6. Forgive
Its about time you let go that grudge you’ve been holding for a month, year or couple years. Life is too short to be mad at someone and keep it with you. Forgiving someone after they hurt you is one of the hardest things in life. By forgiving people you will be more positive and optimistic in your daily life.

7. Grow in Faith
Go to church, read the bible, research your faith, if your lost find God, seek help. Take the time out of your daily life to pray and to open your heart to God. There is so much to learn. Most importantly share stories about your faith and God’s word.

Here’s to making 2014 the best year yet.

To celebrate the end of the semester I decided to work on some holiday canvas’ for my family. My My mom adores snowmen, so of course that was my theme this year.
